New Software Assesses Hull Coatings
Addtime:2014/4/8    Hits:2

AkzoNobel has introduced a digital tool that enables operators in the shipping industry to assess and predict the risk of hull fouling depending on which routes are being traded.

Intertrac software analyzes various data streams to draw up a fouling risk profile, which can then be used to tailor a coatings system to a vessel's specific route, helping to maximize operational efficiencies and reduce costs, according to the company.

It was developed by AkzoNobel's Marine Coatings business.
Identifying 64 Ecosystems
According to the company, the patent-pending Intertrac divides oceans and coastal waters into 64 large marine ecosystems, each with its own fouling risk and characteristics, including salinity, temperature, thermal range, seasonality and typical pH levels.

Using a vessel's Automatic Identification System (AIS), which is available in the public domain, route information is obtained to establish an operating profile and help quantify the hull fouling challenge to that specific vessel, AkzoNobel says.
"This is a valuable tool that enables us to recommend optimal fouling control coating specifications, which in turn helps to generate major cost savings for customers," said Conrad Keijzer, executive committee member responsible for Performance Coatings.
According to the company, the software will also help refine future product development as more is learned about the marine environment in different parts of the world and how it affects different vessels.
